Although oil heat is a safe and quite an economical way of keeping your home warm yet underground oil tanks are prone to pose environmental and health hazards. Over the years, three main types of oil tanks have been used such as: Above ground – are not preferred, being unsightly and quite vulnerable to external elements, despite low maintenance cost and easy detection and repair of leaks Underground – their location and surrounding soils keep them insulated and protected against harm and malicious mischief. Being buried deep under soil, leakage when occurs becomes difficult to detect. Indoor tanks – are easy to install and access. These are most protected from the external elements and weather. Underground oil tanks built before 1980s were made from steel which had tendency to corrode or get rusted due to moisture over time.
